Youth Athletic Development

Preparing our young athletes for their sporting future, not just their next competition

Our team has worked with athletes from the following organisations

Our youth athlete development philosophy

When it comes to Youth Athletic Development we don’t just treat our athletes like small adults. There are key differences like understanding growth and development, language around training, expectations and ensuring that training is fun and engaging for long term buy-in to training and living an athlete lifestyle.

At MFP we pride ourselves on creating an environment to teach our youth athletes what it takes to get the best out of themselves through specific coaching techniques that allow self exploration of movement along with structured training. We teach speed, agility and jumping mechanics yet get our higher intensity efforts through games and play. We show them resistance exercises for strength and resilience yet coach through providing constraints to let them discover the shapes we want to see.

The MFP Athlete Model

We believe that sound mechanics are the foundation for strength and power development. If you are an inefficient mover then it is difficult to be able to apply the required forces to the ground necessary to run fast or jump high. Additionally, movement compensations can be a precursor to injury.

We combine traditional performance testing such as vertical jump and sprint speed with a 5 level movement competency checklist for each movement pattern. This allows us to assess not only performance measures but how your child is progressing through a movement continuum.

A some point in our lives we all get taught how to throw and catch a ball, hit a ball with a bat or shoot a ball into a basket, but how many of us really get taught how to run or jump?

Some people are born to run and jump and can move fluidly, however for the most part most people (especially our youth athletes) don’t sprint, change direction or jump as efficiently or optimally as we think.

Spending time not only exposing them to intense efforts but to specific drills to optimise movement function is crucial to allowing your child to reach their full athletic potential.

We believe that a strong athlete is a resilient athlete. Being strong doesn’t always mean throwing a barbell on your back and away you go. For our growing youth athletes we primarily focus on developing tendon, ligament and bone strength along with muscular strength by exposing them to a wide variety of movements loaded in a variety ways.
